Been A While

It’s been almost 2 months since I last made an entry.  It’s not that I’ve been too busy, or couldn’t come up with something to talk about, but rather I’ve sort of turned on myself more than ever. It’s been a struggle to not let my depression affect my wife and kids. That has been my main goal as of late.

Nevertheless, I’ve been at the gym quite a bit (both BJJ and fitness center).  Let’s see, where to start…  Well I’m fat as shit. I haven’t had the will power to stop eating. It takes every ounce of my being to workout hard enough so I don’t end up on “My 600lbs Life”. I started a new exercise routine that has a lot of heavy lifting. Mixing it up with high intensity cardio had been pretty good.  I can honestly say that my muscles are completely spent by the time my 90min is up.  The first week I was sore as fuck. That’s to be expected though. For the last year or two, my workouts have been of a lighter weight, more reps in nature.

On the mats quite a bit has happened.  Let’s see…  I’ve been attending more classes. Or at least as many as I can. I’ve been to a seminar with world champion Jaoa Assis. That was great. I learned so much, and I’ve already successfully implemented it in to my gi game. A couple of weeks ago I got the 4th stripe on my blue belt.  That’s exciting, right?  I don’t k ow if I deserve it, but it happened. Rolling has been pretty good. I seem to be moving a bit better.  I wish my bottom game would improve. I try so hard down there, but always seem to get stuck. Oh well, I’ll keep plugging away.  I’m sort of thinking about competing again… We’ll see…

Oh ya, a Whistler trip has been booked for early January. I hope to go. 🙂

All About Stretching

“Stretching seems like a pretty simple topic, however, there is a little more to it than most think.” ~http://jiujitsumag.com/all-about-stretching/

I’m always looking for stuff about flexibility.  I’m not the most consistent stretcher, but I’m not the guy who shows up at Jiu Jitsu class and jumps right in to rolls without doing anything.  I have to warm up at least a bit (partly because I’m old as fuck and partly because my knees don’t work), if for nothing else then to get the blood flowing.  Every now and then I make a great effort to improve my flexibility.  Truth be told I would love to be a master of rubber guard.  But after a while when I see no signs of improvement, I slack off a bit.

Anyways, here’s a good article from Jiu-Jitsu Magazine on different kinds of stretching and range of movement.

Goals, Goals, Goals…

I wonder what percentage of people never reach the goals that they set for themselves?  I bet it’s pretty high.  I actually hope it’s high.  That way I don’t feel like as much of a dildo for not even coming close to my physical goals.  It makes me want to scream!  Arrrrrrrrggggggggggghhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Fat fuck!

I’ve been doing several different workouts lately.  Some weights, some TRX, some kettlebells, some spin classes, some Muay Thai, some BJJ, etc, etc…  The body is willing but the flesh is weak.  Very weak.  I don’t think it would be possible for me to work out any harder then I do.  Oh well..  I’ll keep pluggin’ away.

I Let Myself Down

I skipped BJJ last night.  Of course, today I feel like a bag of shit for doing so.  It’s funny how easy it is to justify skipping when you’ve spent the day at work and you’re tired, only to spend the next day cursing yourself for being such a pussy.  Anyways… I’ll have to wait until Monday now to train.

I’ve been thinking about changing up my workout at the gym.  I’m tired of the traditional weight lifting.  Although I do like the feeling of being strong.  I’d like to add TRX Suspension training into the mix.  I’m not really sure how to make a routine or what exercises to do as I’ve never even touched one.  Any recommendations/tips?  I still want to keep some heavy deadlifts and squats (if my knees ever settle down) in my overall plan, but I’m thinking a kettlebell workout 1 day, a TRX workout another day, and a squat/deadlift workout for a 3rd day…  What do you think?
